Assignments that Maximizes Creativity (Post 2)

How do you frame an assignment to maximize creativity?

Why are assignments given? Is it for practice, busy work, fulfilling a quota or requirement, or an opportunity for the student to expand their understanding of something and to share personal understanding? How can we give assignments that challenge the student to expand their understand of the topic and how their personal experiences relate to the topic of discussion?

Assignments should be designed with the 10 rules by Sister Corita Kent in mind, the pursuit of the personal conquest of understanding something.  Assignments should push the limits of how a student defines and understands the topic of discussion, in relation to the self and others. Assignments should assist students in capturing the importance of why the topic is being discussed and how it connects to other classes.

The individualized experience and with the option to share is quintessential to pushing the boundaries of understanding and experience.  Meaningful experience (personal experiences) enacts an optimal experience because the students is building a reference on what they know and care about, and can think about how core ideas can transfer to other topics.

Trisha's Main Components for Creative Assignments:

  • Enact Flow
    • Equal balance of skill (ability) and challenges
  • Personal Experience Connections
    • An aspect should require introspection
    • The student should reflect on how the topic could relate to them, but has the potential to be shared with peers
  • "Material Exploration"
    • A form of exploration and brainstorm should be involved
  • Holistic Learning
    • The students should be able to identify how the assignment connects with other assignments and discussions
  • Play/Game/Fun
    • The assignment should involved a form of play
    • Adolescent play:  assuming different identities and looking from other perspective is important to their personal development
