Maximizing Creativity (Post 1)

What rules should we establish  to maximize creativity?

Before answering this question I wanted to go back to the definitions (dictionary and psychology) of creativity:

Dictionary:
(noun) the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.
synonyms: inventiveness, imagination, innovation, innovativeness, originality, individuality

Psychology:
Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others (Franken, Human Motivation 3rd Ed.)


Answer:
We should establish rules that are flexible, for the individual to allow themselves to generate as many possible solutions  to the problem, or interest at hand. Each rule that Sister Cortia Kent provided the basis for someone to discover something new, whether is was through personal work or holding accountability to the teacher and student.  She uses her rules differently compared to how we use rules normally in our society. Rules are used to keep order, but her rules can activate chaos - or continuous expansion of thought. With chaos, or disorder, one can see every aspect of  what is and what is not, this is important when synthesizing solutions, or generating ideas, that will work. Her rules are more like guidelines to help someone find their full potential within the journey of their artistic process. These rules pave the way for someone to become an expert while also being patient with the self and looking to others for expansion. Once someone understands and gets lost in every aspect of a situation, they can go back to their intent, and apply the knowledge they have acquired to create the optimum experience for themselves to complete a goal.

Some rules that I would enact to maximize creativity are:
  • Use your senses and mind to learn as much as possible about your project
  • Always take a break and come back 
  • Listen to what others have learned
  • Always have a question to find an answer
  • Be open
  • Find meaning in every journey/process you take
  • Follow the rabbit hole

This week I took the time to make several sketches of the different types of hand held LED mirrors that I construct for my project. I wanted to get the general shape of it so that I could get it cut out in wood using illustrator. I also decided last week that  I want my piece to be like a hand held mirror based on the African goddess Oshun. This relates to the idea of replanting roots through original African tradition. Periodic Update #7

This week i spent time finalizing a mirror handle design. I took the design to Illustrator and recreated it with the skills that I had. I decided to laser cut the prototype in card board so that I could manage for potential mistake. During my time cutting and making my mirror I decided on using base wood. I also tested both leather and acrylic to see what I wanted to use for the final design. In the design I choose the Adrinkin ( AYA = I am not afraid of you) Fern symbol which stands for endurance and resourcefulness. Adinkra dictionary definition: “ the fern is a hardy plant that can grow in difficult places. An individual who wears this symbol suggests he has endured many adversities and outlasted much difficulty. ” The symbol is one of fifty three symbols that has survived from the Akan people, now the West African ethnic group of people from Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Research/ Explorations/ Materials/ Tools (Post 3)

Our last class I came to the conclusion that I want to make an interactive sculpture that focuses on emotions and light. The inception of this idea came from thinking about Seasonal Affective Disorder, where people's production of serotonin, and overall positive emotion, lacks during the winter due to decreased exposure to light. I want to create a device and a piece of work that can be " your friend", listen to you, and affirm you through the movement of light. This project idea is pretty practical and depending on the time and resources I can control how complicated I want the project to be.  As of right now, here is where my brainstorming had led me.  I need to...
